PROFILE
Onmyouza are a band that are difficult to categorize. The band members themselves introduce their music as "Yokai Heavy Metal" Yokai (creatures from Japanese folklore) being the subject matter of many of their songs. This however, does not give full scope to the wide range of styles that the band performs including pop, rock, ballads and their own special "matsuri" style compositions that end every concert performance. Admittedly their music has a strong metal influence, but there are also many aspects of traditional Japanese music woven throughout their compositions. The unusual band lineup of two vocalists, one female and one male backed by twin guitarists and drummer strengthens the band's conceptual focus of contrasts and opposites which in turn gives rise to the meaning of the band's name Onmyouza "The fusion of darkness and light".

BIOGRAPHY
Onmyouza formed in Osaka Japan during 1999 as a four piece group consisting of Matatabi (b, vo), Kuroneko (vo), Maneki (g) and Karukan (g). The band debuted at the Osaka Brandnew venue on the 20th of June and on the very same day the band released their first demo tape titled "Tsune ni Gessho Wo Motte Senji ni Kuwa wo Nisshin Inyo so min". At this early point the band were without a drummer and so to end this unsatisfactory situation Tora was recruited as support drummer. During the Summer and Autumn of 1999 the band performed a small number of concerts in and around the Osaka area. By the end of the year Tora had become a full member of the group, but up until that point and on the band's first album he is credited as support drummer only. Kikoku Tensyo was released on December 5th 1999 through the bands own "Moryo's Box" label. Unusually for a first indies release the CD was a full 10 track, hour long album instead of the typical indies pattern of releasing singles and mini-albums before embarking on a full length album. The band brought their first year to a close by performing at the Shinsaibashi Muse Hall at the "end of the century chapter 4" event. The following year was a highly progressive year for the band, a steady stream of live performances, the development of a lively and enthusiastic fanbase and Onmyouza's first live one-man show brought the band both recognition and respect. In August Onmyouza's first single Oka no Kotowari was released. The year was crowned with the band's highly anticipated second full album Hyakki Ryoran. Both released on their own label before they were re-released on the "Mandrake Root" label.By 2001 Onmyouza were going from strength to strength thanks to their energetic performances, fine musicianship and tireless enthusiasm. The band's hard work was recognised as the band was signed to the major label King Records. Onmyouza performed their major debut concert at the end of July, and after extensive touring for the remainder of the year made their major label debut with the single Tsuki ni Murakumo hana ni kaze. The year ended with a special session band performance alongside members of progressive metal band Gonon-ish and Uchida Yuuichiru the bassist of Kinnukushoujotai. The band's third full album Kojin Rasetsu was released on the 10th January 2002. This was soon followed by the major label re-release of the band's first two albums as well as Fuiin Kairan which was a compilation album of early rarities and previously unreleased songs. Between the releases came a small number of in-store events to celebrate the many CD's that the band had released in their debut major label year. The band then embarked on their first nationwide tour to great acclaim.Matatabi, the main song writer of the band had always mentioned in interviews that he was very fond of the UK metal band Judas Priest, and this was one of the reasons why the band recorded a special cover version (in English) of the Judas Priest song Beyond the Realms of Death for the A Tribute to the Priest tribute album. Previously the band had recorded Iron Maiden's The Trooper (in English) for another tribute album A Tribute to the Beast On both CD's, released in 2002/ 2003 Onmyouza were the only Japanese bands included on the albums.2003 was once again a very busy year for the band. The year started with the release of their album Hoyoku-Rindo followed by a pair of fairly short but intense tours. Onmyouza's next single Hoyoku Tensho was released on the 4th of June followed on the 25th June by a DVD release of the former indies VHS version of Hyakki Korinden and a special live performance album Sekinetsu Enbu. The band then performed two tours between which the maxi-single Mezame was released. Mezame marked a change for the band as it was their first "stand alone" single that contained songs that could only be found on that CD single instead of being released later on an album. Further presses of the band's first two albums as well as the maxi-single Nemuri were put on sale in January 2004. Soon after a live concert DVD entitled Hakko Ranbu containing footage from the band's performance at the "Electric Ladyland" venue preceded the band's latest full album release Mugen-Hoyo Several in-store events were held to promote the releases including two special events to showcase the band's first two scorebook releases. The band then toured extensively to promote their releases as well as performing their new material to the delight of their fans. On the first day of the band's Autumn tour, Onmyouza released the first of a special trilogy of singles in their Yoshitsune trilogy. The remaining two singles were released in the subsequent months to critical acclaim. The three title songs from each of the single releases would be put together as one complete 23 minute song for the band's next album release.Unusually 2005 did not begin with a series of new releases from the band, Onmyouza's first release of the year came in March and was a concert performance DVD containing footage from the previous years, Wagashikabane wo Koete yuke tour. The DVD unlike previous DVD releases included full footage of the entire concert including MC breaks and three full encores. The concept of including the entire concert was to involve the viewer as much as possible and even included Matatabi addressing the DVD viewer to join in the famous "Ooichi ni no saiyodo" chant during the song Gainageteya. In April the band released the single Koga Ninpocho which the band wrote and recorded for the anime series "Basilisk". The band's first live performance of the year was a special "fanclub only" performance at the Nogakudo Noh Theatre in Tokyo, Onmyouza were the first band to ever play on a Noh stage in Japan. A DVD of the concert titled Yugen-Reibu was released in August. However, proceeding the DVD, the band's long awaited sixth album Garyo-Tensei was released on the 22nd June. It is notable that the album made an appearance into the Oricon top ten album chart. In the summer of 2005 it was announced that Onmyouza would be playing their first ever overseas concerts. The band played three concerts, Belgium, France and Germany between the 28th of October and 1st November 2005 as well as attending special autograph sessions. The tour was successful and Kuroneko on behalf of the rest of the band has promised to return to play in Europe once again! At the beginning of 2006 Onmyouza released a long awaited double "best of album" entitled Inyo Shugyoku (which included in the first press edition bonus) live tracks and footage taken from the band's 2005 European tour. The footage contained many candid shots of the band enjoying a timeout from their offstage duties and gives a brief glimpse the contents of their first ever photobook Hyaku no Oni ga Oushuu wo Yuku which was released on February 28th.Two live releases were made available for sale in July 2006, a live concert double CD Onmyo-Raibu (a pun on the word "live") which was followed soon after by a live concert double DVD Syugyoku-Enbu. The summer of 2006 brought the beginning of a Japan-wide tour of more than 50 concerts. Concert performances in Paris and Berlin have also been announced. The tour is planned to end in November with a Tour Final at the Zepp Tokyo.

Hitomi Takahashi

Hitomi Takahashi (高橋 瞳, Takahashi Hitomi, born April 8, 1989) is a J-Rock/J-pop singer from Miyagi Prefecture in Japan. After being selected as finalist in the Sony Music SD audition, which contained about 20,000 applicants, Hitomi entered the music scene in 2005 with her single "Bokutachi no Yukue". The single was an instant hit for her, and entered the weekly Oricon charts at #1, making her the third solo debut singer to achieve this.

Favorite manga: Gintama
Favorite things: Dancing, collecting hats, film festivals

Biography

Pre-Debut
Hitomi Takahashi was born on April 8, 1989 in the Miyagi prefecture of Japan. Because of her abnormally large eyes, her parents named her "Hitomi", meaning "pupil/eye" in Japanese. By the influence of her father, she grew up listening to his favorite music, which was classic rock such as Eric Clapton and the Beatles.
In 2002, she entered junior-high/middle school. Upon entrance, Hitomi joined the school softball team and joined Kendo, where she obtained the level of sho-dan. It was during these years that she expressed an interest in becoming an artist's backup dancer, and began dancing with her friends.
During a karaoke singing event in 2003, Hitomi's friends encouraged her to sing live. Though she expressed a disliking for singing karaoke in front of a large crowd, she eventually sang because of her friend's encouragement, and from that time on the desire to become a singer awoke in her. During her second year in junior-high school, in the middle of the summer of 2003, Hitomi applied for the Sony Music Auditions. Because of a change in interest, Hitomi moved from singing dance music to singing rock music.
In 2004, Hitomi was selected as the finalist for the Sony Music SD audition (Vo-che3); 20,000 others had auditioned. She had been worried that because of her height (147 cm), she would be overlooked, but her powerful voice attracted the attention of people while she sang live. The end of 2004 found her being chosen to sing the theme song for "Gundam SEED DESTINY". Recording of her song "Bokutachi no Yukue" began at the end of the year.

sympathy era
In 2005, she was in the middle of high school entrance exams as the title for her 1st single "Bokutachi no Yukue" was announced. The single was released on April 2005, and debuted at #1 on the Oricon charts. This was a huge success, making Hitomi the second female singer to have a debut single in the #1 spot, and the third solo artist to have a debut single reach #1. The single ended up selling well over 100,000 copies.
Hitomi soon entered Shiogama Girls High School, and started her first radio personality on Date fm (FM Sendai) called "Takahashi Hitomi ~Sound D・N・A~".
The second single from Hitomi, "evergreen", was released on August 12, 2005. The song was used as the theme song for the Japanese TV drama "New Kids War". The single sales were much lower than her previous single, with the single debuting at #22 on the Japanese Oricon Charts, and selling a little less than 30,000 copies.
Takahashi's third single, "Aozora no NAMIDA", was soon released on November 30, 2005, and it was used as the 1st opening theme song for the anime BLOOD+. (It had originally been planned for an October 12, 2005 released, but was pushed back to the later date.) Its first week on the charts found it at #8 on the Oricon charts with 44,629 copies sold, and it eventually sold over 80,000 copies. This was a huge leap from her past single "evergreen".
On February 22, Hitomi's Official Fan Club was revealed, the title being a play on the first letter of her name and her height, "H147." Hitomi also won an award at the 20th Japanese Gold Disc Awards for New Artist of the Year, and sang live at the event.
The first studio album from the singer, "sympathy", was released on March 1, 2006. The album came in two formats, CD only and CD+DVD (limited edition), and contained 12 tracks in total, with 7 of them being previously unreleased songs. The album debuted at #10 for its first week on the Oricon Charts, and sold over 30,000 copies.
For the release of her first album "sympathy", Hitomi held her first live concert on April 1, 2006. Commenting on how much she enjoyed the concert, Hitomi soon decided to hold more concerts for her "sympathy" album. The concerts were named the Hitomi Takahashi Live "Sympathy" ~BOXX Series~, and became a way for her to promote new songs. In total, the Hitomi Takahashi Live "Sympathy" ~BOXX Series~ had six lives.

Bamboo Collage era
Hitomi released her 4th single "Communication" on July 12, 2006. The song was the ending theme song for "MUSIC FIGHTER" during the month of July 2006. Once finally released, this single failed to make it in the Top 20 Daily Charts. It also failed to make it in the Weekly Top 30, and was revealed to debut at #60 on the charts, selling a little more than 2,000 copies in its first week.
It was during the eighth month of 2006 that news of a new single surfaced. This single, titled "Ko·mo·re·bi", was officially announced to be Hitomi's 5th single at the end of August, and was used as the theme song for the movie "Tegami", which features actors Takayuki Yamada, Tetsuji Tamayama, and Erika Sawajiri. Similar to her past single, "Ko·mo·re·bi" failed to chart in the Top 30 Weekly Charts, and debuted at #50 for its first week on the charts, only selling about 300 more copies than "Communication". In spite of this, Hitomi was chosen to be one of many artists to take part in the new tribute album for the new Death Note movie.
Following the release of her two unsuccessful singles was the song "Candy Line," which was officially announced on Christmas Day. The song was chosen to be used as the 4th ending theme for the anime series, Gintama. When released, the single became her biggest hit since "evergreen", and reached #14 during its first week on the Oricon charts, and overall was reported as selling over 15,000 copies.
As her 2nd single of 2007, Takahashi released her 7th single, titled "Jet Boy Jet Girl", which was released on August 1st, 2007. The title song was the new opening theme song to the anime "Terra e...", and her second single to be released in CD only and CD+DVD formats. The single did not receive the same success as "Candy Line", but sold over double of her 4th and 5th singles.
Takahashi also released a new single a little more than one month after "Jet Boy Jet Girl", with the title "Tsuyoku Nare". The title song, aptly named "Tsuyoku Nare", was used as the ending theme song of the movie "Hōtai Club". As her past four singles, this song was produced by Takuya, and the lyrics were personally written by Takahashi herself. Though heavily promoted via the movie, "Tsuyoku Nare" failed to match the success of her "sympathy" era singles.
Continuing the speedy releasing of material, Takahashi released her 2nd album "Bamboo Collage". The album featured all the singles since the release of "Communication", and was her first album to reflect her change from pop/rock music to punk-rock, a change which was made because her voice was thought to be better suited to the latter genre. As most of the singles released for promotion of this album, "Bamboo Collage" failed to enter the Oricon Weekly Top 30. Despite this, though, Takahashi held her first tour, which consisted of four lives during the early parts of December.

2008 and beyond
Since the album release and tour, Takahashi kept a low profile in the music scene, but was recording for a few months. On March 1st, 2008, Takahashi graduated from high school, and moved from Sendai to Tokyo. Her new song "Atashi no Machi, Ashita no Machi" is scheduled to be the first opening theme song of the anime, Toshokan Sensō, while another untitled song will be used as the ending theme of the NHK BS2 TV show "Digital Stadium".

PROFILE
Sadie is one of the most successful newcomers in the indies world. Their heavy and aggressive yet melodic sound has given them a lot of fans and great record sales. Not only are most of their releases sold out, almost every concert they have sells out as well. The band started in early 2005 and have so far gained popularity not just in Japan, but in the whole world.

BIOGRAPHY
Sadie was created in February 2005 by Mao, Tsurugi, Aki, Mizuki and Sora. They started their activities on March 18, 2005 at BIG CAT in Osaka where they played as the opening act for Fatima, D, shulla and others. A few months later on December third, Sadie had their first oneman called 「dekiai ~ As a sad matter of fact ~ 」. At this concert they introduced their new single Dekiai, which came out only a few days later.Everything seemed to be going well for this young band until their drummer Sora left them in January 2006. The group decided to stay together and released more singles and in March, Sora was replaced by a new drummer named Kei. He was given a warm welcome by the fans and after joining the group, Sadie released their first mini-album, The Trend Killer, which was limited to only 4444 copies. Even though Sadie had always done their own thing and tried to stand out from other bands, they were often compared to Dir en grey after the release of this mini-album.They continued releasing material and touring and they quickly got their own faithful fan base. At the end of 2006, they released their second mini-album THE SUICIDE MACHINE and also started a tour by the same name, which kept them occupied until the end of the year. 2007 started with a lot of concerts for this promising band and because of massive sales, a third press of their first mini-album The Trend Killer was released in February. Acouple months later on April 18th, Sadie released their first DVD; it was limited to 3333 copies and titled THE SUICIDAL APPLICANTS. After their tour, they released a second DVD titled Distract against the terrors. During the summer of 2007, Sadie opened a fanclub which they named UNDEAD.

PROFILE
The name RENTRER EN SOI means something along the lines of "return in self" in French, and this theme of self-reflection is an important theme to the five band members. The band's music is always evolving and they have a lot to offer: quite complex, melodious and sometimes heavy songs combined with Satsuki's low, despairing growls. On the other hand, melancholic and dream-like songs, which are complimented by graceful and emotional vocals, are also found in the band's extensive discography. Their looks have also changed drastically over the years. They started as a visual kei band with middle-ages inspired costumes and currently have a more mature and casual look. The band has also spread their activities overseas and have toured Europe and performed at a number of American anime conventions.

BIOGRAPHY
Rentrer en Soi formed in 2001, but their activities during their first two years were scarce. They released a few demo-tapes, a few singles that were only available at their lives, and that was it. At first, the band consisted of only four members: Satsuki on vocals, Takumi and Ao on guitar and Ryu on bass.A slow start didn't seem very promising, but their determination paid off a short time later. In 2003, Mika joined as the drummer, completing the line-up. It was around that time that they caught the attention of Yukari, former vocalist of the band BAISER, who had turned his focus toward producing bands. The result of their collaboration was released in January 2004, the mini-album Yurikago, which was distributed by the label Free Will, of which they were soon to become a part. Yukari's influence was audible on the mini-album and the band's songs seemed to sound quite a bit like BAISER's songs. This was definitely not a negative thing as their popularity increased along with the number of fans. On the same day as the release of the mini-album they held a one-man, which completely sold out. Right after their first one-man, Ao left the band and was replaced shortly after by Shun; the line-up has remained the same since then.A DVD that somewhat matched Yurikago was released in August. It contained PVs of the songs, which were all recorded in France. Shortly after, they released the single, Wither, and their first full length album, Sphire-Croid, followed a few months later, taking them into the new year. For this album, the members were all dressed in costumes that seemed to come directly from the middle ages. Some of the costumes such as those involving some harnesses might not have been very comfortable on stage, but it was a very unique style that hadn't been used by any other visual kei band. That same year, two new singles were released along with the twin mini-albums, Astre no Ito and Kein no Hitsugi, which were the last releases that Yukari produced for them.Perhaps because of the change of producer, their style began to change again and it was not the only thing that changed. They also changed their name to an all caps format. The evolution in sound was displayed even more clearly with the release of their self-titled album, RENTRER EN SOI, in May 2006. The gentle melodies had disappeared and it had a much rougher sound overall. Satsuki's whimpers and breathy voice had been replaced by growls and screams. Also their style shifted from visual kei and the band wore much more casual outfits and make-up.A number of new singles followed rapidly and the band started to prepare for another album, The bottom of chaos, released in August 2007. Before its release, the band took another important step in their career as they performed in Europe for the first time in July. They performed only two shows: one in France and one in Germany. A few months after, the band also got the opportunity to perform in the USA, at the anime convention Oni-con. In April 2008, the band was supposed to perform in the USA again, this time at the Clash Against Commercialism event, organized by their label Free Will in NYC. Unfortunately, the event was canceled, but the band still performed in the USA again, at another anime convention in June. For the future, RENTRER EN SOI has announced that they will be releasing a new mini-album called MEGIDDO in October. We're curious to see what they bring us, maybe their sound will change again? Moreover, it seems that whatever this band does, it is successful and we're sure that that they'll continue in this way!

PROFILE
the pillows is a band that has seen huge success in Japan, but has also enjoyed ever increasing popularity overseas. Ensuring their success in the United States was the release of the soundtrack for the anime FLCL (furikuri), which consists of only songs by the pillows.Upbeat rock, catchy melodies, and Manabu's powerful guitar riffs paired with Sato's drumming and Yamanaka's unique vocals give the pillows a distinct sound in the J-music scene.

BIOGRAPHY
Founded in 1989 with Sawao Yamanaka on vocals, Shinichiro Sato on drums, Kenji Ueda on bass, and Yoshiaki Manabe on guitar, the pillows first toured under the name The Coinlocker Babies until they signed with the indies label Captain Records and released their debut album in 1990.Their first full-length album, Moon Gold was released the following year under the Pony Canyon label and Ueda left the band shortly after the completion of their second full-length album, White Incarnation, in pursuit of a solo career and work in production. Taking his place was Tetsuya Kishima, who was featured as a "support member" in respect for the original line-up, and the pillows made another label change after a short break. Their major debut album, Kool Spice was then released on King Records in 1994. In 1996 they began organizing live events called "Delicious Bump Show" and their commercial breakthrough came with the release of several hit singles the following year. Their style changed, swapping their often jazz-influenced songs for heavier sounds and they introduced a mascot, Buster-kun, who resembles a mix between a dog and a teddy bear, causing their followers to be known as "little busters."Sawao founded his own label, Delicious Label, in 1999 where alternative rock bands like noodles and monokuro were featured. That same year, Kashima left the band and was replaced by Jun Suzuki on bass. One of the most important events in the band's history is Studio Gainax's licensing of the pillows's last three albums for the anime series FLCL (furikuri). Additionally, the band produced two new singles, Ride on the shooting star and I think I can, for the anime, thus branching their reach outside of Japan and ensuring international recognition. In the following three years, Sawao continued work on his label and released solo works while Manabe released two solo albums as well. In 2003, the pillows's album, Penalty Life, was released in the United States almost two years later.Celebrating their 15th anniversary in 2004, a tribute album for the pillows was recorded and featured artists such as Ellegarden, noodles, Straightener, Bump of Chicken, and Mr. Children. This year also turned out to be one of the band's busiest.Their first live in the USA was held at the famous SXSW (South by Southwest) Festival in Austin, Texas in March of 2005. They played among other Japanese artists such as noodles and Bonnie Pink and followed their performance at the festival with a tour through several big cities in the United States. In 2005 Sawao began work with GLAY's bassist, Jiro and Straightener's drummer, Shinpei, on the project The Predators.the pillows kicked off 2006 with the release of an album entitled My Foot in January followed by two-date concert in Mexico that summer and, just a few months later, they made another trip to Mexico and toured the USA.This year has already been a productive one for this prolific band. Their DVD, LOSTMAN GO TO AMERICA, which contained footage from their sold-out US tour, as well as some from their lives in Mexico, hit stores in February and the title track from their first single of the year, Scarecrow, is being used as the ending theme for the anime MOONLIGHT MILE.With another full-length, Wake up!Wake up!Wake up! already released, a new single, Ladybird Girl, and another single planned for later this year, the pillows will certainly stay busy making music and entertaining fans through the rest of 2007.

The Underneath

LINE UP
Vocal : TAKA
Guitar : MASATO
Guitar : TAL
Bass : RYO
Drums : MASAKI

PROFILE
the Underneath plays a darker style of visual rock, along the lines of D'espairsRay, for example. The musically experienced members, formerly known as Transtic Nerve, all have a part in composing the music and finishing what is the Underneath.

BIOGRAPHY
the Underneath comprises the same line-up as Transtic Nerve, a rock band who started their career back in 1996. At the end of 2007, after spending a few years with a low profile, the members surprised their fans announcing the Underneath as their fresh project. The band has managed to gather a lot of international interest as they were announced to be a part of the well-known North American alternative rock tour, Taste of Chaos in spring 2008. They will be performing together with two other Japanese acts, D'espairsRay and MUCC.It seems that the group has got a lot of plans in store for the future and while waiting for the first releases, samples of their music can be listened to at their MySpace profile.

Drums : Sho (ex COЯE THE CHILD)

OFFICIAL LINKS
UnsraW - official site

PROFILE
Newly signed to Speed Disk, one of the biggest Visual Kei labels, UnsraW is doing everything they can to be one of the flagship bands of tomorrow's Visual world. Musically speaking, Yuki, the vocalist, is the inner essence of UnsraW since he writes both the music and lyrics for every song of the band. You can bet he's a huge fan of Dir en Grey and its vocalist, Kyo, as you can easily feel their influence in UnsraW's music.Another distinguishing factor is their look. SpeedDisk is really going all-out for this band by dressing them in ID Japan outfits (a famous Japanese clothing design firm that specializes in making Visual Kei costumes) and by making them wear monstrous masks designed by Screaming Mad George who has also designed for hide, Penicillin, X Japan and other famous artists....

BIOGRAPHY
Everything began a few months after the disbanding of COЯE THE CHILD in April of 2006. Yuki convinced Sho to create a new band and they were soon joined by Jun on bass and Tetsu and Rai (Joker's Satsuki) on guitars.UnsraW set up quickly and started performing secretly from July to August. They were quickly noticed by SpeedDisk, who would later on create a tailor-made visual look for them. The band was finally presented to the public during a free oneman concert, Gate of Death, that was sponsored by ID Japan on August 23rd. In the following week, they released the a maxi single, -9-, that contained Warai Oni, a song from COЯE THE CHILD's discography. Being limited to only 1000 copies, the maxi sold out quickly. Two months later, they released their second maxi that sold out almost as quickly as it's predecessor, proving the notoriety of the band. They also appeared on a promotional CD offered with any subscription to SHOXX magazine with the song Dust to Dust, and also appeared on the omnibus album Graceful Playboys vol. 1 with the song Maria, another cover of a COЯE THE CHILD song. Their first mini-album, which compiled their two first singles, was released in December, preceded by the oneman, Spiral Mind. Both versions of the mini-album quickly sold out on preorders and they will be rereleased in January with three additional songs, making this upcoming CD their first studio album.
